Somerville, MA – Cardea Technology, Inc. has released version 3 of its principal software product, BoneStation. The software is a web-based bone density reporting system that consists of a workflow application that electronically receives scan data and images from DXA (Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry) bone densitometers and allows physicians to adeptly create reports and print or transmit them to an Electronic Medical Records System. DXA bone mineral density scans are encrypted and transmitted securely from a bone densitometer to BoneStation's central database, whereby a physician can then review them from a browser-based web application from any location. After review, the physician’s bone density report can be automatically transmitted to a patient record system.
The new version of BoneStation is available this month and it includes the FRAX® algorithm for assessing bone fracture risk. FRAX® is a tool developed by a team led by Dr. John Kanis, a leading expert in osteoporosis research. The tool uses clinical risk factors to assess a person’s risk of bone fracture. By making the FRAX® tool available in the BoneStation reporting software, Cardea has made it easier for a physician using the software to include the patient’s FRAX® score and interpretation on a standard bone density report and provide more in-depth information about a patient’s bone density.
The FRAX® algorithm is activated in BoneStation when National Osteopososis Foundation (NOF) and International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) criteria for use of the algorithm are met. Examples of criteria are patient age, fracture history and menopausal status. When the criteria have been met, risk factors supplied by the patient or doctor on BoneStation’s electronic patient questionnaire, are submitted to the FRAX algorithm in BoneStation. The risk factors are interpreted and a result is given to the physician which is then reviewed and automatically displayed on the final bone density report.
In addition to the FRAX® algorithm, BoneStation version 3 also includes important security updates and the tracking of user activity. A sample demo of the reporting application with FRAX is available on the product web site, www.bonestation.com. To access the sample demo, a temporary user account is set up at the following web address: http://demo.bonestation.com/signup
Cardea Technology’s goal is to help DXA imaging practices become more efficient and to acquire the benefits of technology that may lead to better quality reporting, system integration and better patient care.
